Council is actively working with Regional Development Victoria, Bega and the Strathmerton community to understand Bega’s planned closure of the Strathmerton site and the implications for our community in both the short and medium to long term.

Our focus remains clear: To ensure the affected workers and their families are supported by Bega and connected to the required support services in the short term, while working with key stakeholders such as Regional Development Victoria and local businesses to strengthen our community and ensure long-term economic stability.

Key actions Council is undertaking:

  • Speaking to local community groups and businesses following the announcement to understand any immediate and long-term impacts and needs
  • Working with Regional Development Victoria and other agencies to explore business development opportunities within Moira Shire
  • Regularly meeting with Bega to understand support measures undertaken, planned community engagement, and transition/future site use discussions
  • Hosting the Moira Job and Careers Expo on June 19.

Council is interested in hearing directly from our community to help understand current concerns and sentiment and to look for future opportunities to continue supporting Strathmerton and the broader impacted community.

Council is collecting the information contained in this engagement tool to help Council understand the community's perspective on the planned closure of Bega's Strathmerton plant.
